RAC Car Passport

"How do you harness the power of data to launch a revolutionary new service?"

With more than eight million members, the RAC is well placed to understand the challenges of getting a great value car through a private sale but without the risk to money and time. To position the RAC firmly ahead of its competition, we launched RAC Car Passport in 2015 – a completely unique system which instantly provides history and valuation reports for any vehicle ever registered in the country.

Project Summary

Getting technical

We built the RAC Car Passport in order to provide users with a report containing vehicle, valuation, review and historical information. Thanks to complex real-time integration with four external data providers - Experian, Glasses, WhatCar? and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) - RAC Car Passport is the only car checker in the UK to provide accurate and comprehensive reports instantly.

Integrating multiple systems doesn’t have to be complex, but when they use different formats and need to be consolidated into an easy to understand, instantly accessible report, it then becomes more of a challenge (which to be honest we quite enjoy!)

The resulting product

The instant Buyer's Report aims to give users car confidence before they purchase by providing a complete history check of the car including 10 alerts covering outstanding finance, if it's been stolen, written off or scrapped and any mileage discrepancies.

The Seller's Report is designed to be shared with buyers for a more successful sale and includes a complete history check, 3 months RAC Breakdown Cover to pass onto your buyer, MOT history including latest and previous MOT reports. The report also provides the average running costs for the make and model, an independent WhatCar? review and gives sellers an advert template, a sales receipt and a handy checklist with useful hints and tips.
